Rare to find, 1972 Volkswagen Camper Van, converted by Sportsmobile here in the USA. These vans were transported to the Sportsmobile plant in Andrews, Indiana, by Volkswagen when new and converted into a camper, comparable to the Westfalia German brand. There were than transported back to VW dealers in the US for sale. Some of the Sportsmobile features that bested the Westfalia was a feature known as the "Penthouse" top which raised straight up instead of tilting offering a full mattress bed (instead of hammocks) and more headroom for passengers and sleepers. The closet, sink, refrigerator and seating configurations were often the same as the Westfalia. In 1972, the Type 4, 1700cc VW engine, with 65 HP, became available (if not standard) which afforded more horsepower and flexibility in the power range and this van is so equipped. This van also has a Weber carb conversion and "scavenger" exhaust. Front disc brakes was also an important drivability feature for the '72 van. This van was titled in Oklahoma and shows very minor bubbling in the paint in a few areas. The floor pan is rust free as is the majority of the van. If you are reading this, you know how popular these vans have become and finding one that is stock and not rusted out is a chore. At D&P Sales LLC in Wichita, KS.
